Purpose

The concern about increasing environmental problems is universal. Forests are degrading, soils are eroding, wildlife is retreating, rain is diminishing, rivers are shrinking, land and water resources are degrading, pollution is increasingly threatening climate change. Invasive, exotic, alien weeds are the second largest cause of biodiversity loss in the world. Parthenium is one such invasive weed, and is one among the top seven recently notified alien species in India. Damage caused by this weed is found to be irreparable in many countries. The environment is becoming less and less habitable. Natural disasters like tsunami, cyclones, droughts and earthquakes are becoming more frequent. And, on top of all, there is the population explosion. Thus, sustainable development has become most relevant today than ever.
Scope
Environmentally sustainable development has been recognized as the approach to solve the impending biodiversity problems. Building sustainability has to be simultaneously approached as a multifold social, economic and ecological task. The increasing population, lopsided development activities and rapid industrialization have caused enormous ecological imbalances. Sustainable development envisages scientifically reorienting the traditional approach to development and such activities need to be integrated with the emerging environmental concerns for attaining sustainable development. All the factors responsible for degradation of the environment should be managed scientifically. This could be initiated through creation of awareness at various levels. This Conference serves as a common platform for scholars and institutions of various disciplines to discuss the challenges and to find out solutions for mitigation of problems in the present context; hence, this Conference. The participants are from agricultural universities, representatives from Forest/Environment Departments, Environmental Engineering, NGOs/Voluntary Organizations and Pollution Control Boards.
